You will usually find these valves on a Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filters as well as on sand filters. Over time the metal spring loses its form and has less tension to press the valve down onto the valve seat gasket. This is where the leak occurs. Orlando Pool Filter Maintenance

For our weekly service customers, in the off season we perform annual diatomaceous earth (D.E.) filter teardown & degrease services. This filter cleaning is very different from the normal backwashing that is done on a regular basis. The service takes approximately an hour to an hour and a half and costs $94.99. This video shows the steps of performing that service plan and is a great explanation of what it takes to keep your D.E. filter running properly all year round.

While your tank is open we examine and replace all internal parts that are worn and may cause your pool to be shut down during your swim season.

To keep the video entertaining to watch, there were many detailed steps that were left out of taking your filter apart and putting it back together without damaging your grids as well as making your filter leak free. This is not a complete step by step video for D.E. filter maintenance. Damaged DE Filter Grids

For those of you that have diatomaceous earth (D.E.) filters on your pool, here is an example of a torn grid.  This was pulled from a filter that was caked full of D.E.  For some odd reason this was the only one that was ripped, but it was heavily damaged.  If you notice powder or dirt blowing through your jets upon starting your pump, while vacuuming or when you add DE powder after the backwash cycle you may have a ripped grid or two.

These grids should last 4 – 5 years before needing replacement. To keep them in good working order you should backwash as necessary.  For further instructions on how to do this, see DIY Pool Care Step 8.

Once a year you should have your tank taken apart and cleaned.  Over time the D.E. packs in tight and the grids need to be hosed out and degreased.

Adding the proper amount of D.E. is essential to keep your filter functioning properly.  I cannot tell you how many times I have talked to inexperienced pool owners who never knew you had to add D.E. powder.  Without it the grids will get caked with oils and gunk only to be ruined prematurely.

With our company expect to pay for an $85 service call along with $20-$30 per grid depending on your filter size.  Many filters have 8 grids in them.  Usually when 50% are damaged DE filter grids we recommend changing all of the grids out.  It will cost less in service calls and save you hassle because of the other grids breaking apart shortly thereafter.

DE Tank: Annual Cleaning from an Orlando Pool Care Specialist

Pictured above is the inside of a DE tank pool filter.  This type of filter requires annual maintenance to clean the filter grids.  The DE powder is sprayed off of the grids; I then apply degreaser to them and reassemble the filter.  This process takes about an hour and a half and the cost is $85.  As you can see, the grids are clean and ready for another year of pool service.

Orlando Pool Filter: Clean & Clear Installation

Today I installed a new filter for a client’s 18,000 gallon pool.  This filter is a Pentair Clean & Clear 100 and it is my filter of choice.  I like Pentair pool filters because they are very reliable, durable and their design offers easy access for cleaning.  In general my clients with Pentair pool filters enjoy extended use of their filters without the headaches of constant breakdowns and repairs.
